Palm Oil Production in Malaysia
World’s Second Largest Producer and Exporter of Palm Oil
Malaysia currently accounts for 35% of World Palm Oil Production. If taken into account of other oils & fats produced in the country, Malaysia accounts for 15% of the World’s total Production of oils and fats.
Cultivation Areas of Palm Oil in Malaysia
Sarawak, with an extensive landbank, established its first palm oil plantation in the eighties. By 1990 the area under palm oil was 55,000 hectares, rising to 330,000 hectares by 2000. By 2012, the total area of palm oil plantations was approximately 1 million hectares.
By contrast, the total planted area in Malaysia, including Sabah but excluding Sarawak is just less than 4 million hectares.
However, while the land available for oil palm plantations in West Malaysia and Sabah are almost exhausted, research shows that Sarawak can plant another million hectares of oil palm plantation by the year 2020.
